SYNOPSIS
After a night that changed everything, a young poet walks through his apartment drenched in sweat – he has become a murderer. Now he must rearrange the events into a story from which he himself can emerge as a hero. He remembers…
Haunted by insecurities, fears and constant inner conflict, cranky young poet Nero presents himself to the outside world as a grander version of himself. He enjoys the esteem in which he is held by his successful and eccentric friend and mentor Kai and his easygoing, hedonistic girlfriend Lola. While Nero strives to keep his true self from leaking out, he is loved by his key confidants precisely for his whimsical nature. As he fears losing control of events, the line between delusion and reality begins to blur.
His attempts to prevent the worst from happening by rigorous action end in disaster – Nero has become the murderer of those who truly understood him.
DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT
The idea for „Who Brought the Fire“ was born during the first Covid lockdown at the young age of eigthteen. As week after week of agonizing isolation passed, without a daily routine, without an activity to pursue, we felt like we were sinking more and more into our minds, losing touch with both society and reality. Always in a pair, we began to imagine fantasy worlds, make up fictious friends and celebrate imaginary parties. In an autodestructive frenzy, we gradually created a strange parallel world of our desires, a world full of music and colorful lights, which at first resembled reality, but at second glance seemed strange and alien. Even more detached from reality is the questionable hero of our story: the eccentric poet Nero. He too is full of contradictions and conflict. Shrill costumes and set design, a peculiar speaking style of our characters and exclusively interior motifs as the main locations create a feeling of isolation and alienation, showing that Nero is hero and narrator at the same time.
Our debut film was produced by ourselves with a minimal budget and realized independently in Berlin together with a lovely team of young aspiring filmmakers. Nero‘s story is about the primal human striving for control. The fear of losing his great love, his fear of transience, plunges him into a downward spiral of paranoia and misinterpretation.
Nero‘s delusional interpretation of the events reveals the subjective nature of our world and the extent to which it seems to be constituted by our thoughts. This is what ultimately causes Nero‘s failure.
„Who Brought the Fire“ doubts the belief in free will and leaves us with one question: Do our thoughts determine our fate?
